FAQs

What is the average cost of renovating a window?

It all depends on how much work each window needs, but standard draught-proofing without replacing rotten sills, glazing, etc. starts at approximately £400 per window. For a more accurate estimate, please get in touch to arrange a free, no-obligation survey.

Can you fix window condensation?

The main way to combat condensation is to further ventilate your home (i.e. open your windows from time to time). The moisture in your home is caused by heating, bodies, etc. and it settles on the nearest cold surface, which is usually your windows. Double glazing units will be slightly less cold and therefore you may notice slightly less condensation, however, your home will also be better insulated, thus more moisture may be contained within your home.

Do I need scaffolding?

Usually, no. Where possible, we do all work in situ and take the sashes out from the inside of the property. Because of this, we ask that the rooms we will be working in are cleared of any obstructing furniture, protecting any remaining furniture with dust sheets. If scaffolding is necessary, for the safety of our team, your family, and passers-by, we will discuss and organise this with you in advance.

I live in a listed building / conservation area - can you work on my property?

Quite simply, yes, we can! We have completed lots of work over the years on listed properties and those within conservation areas. Working closely with local conservation and planning officers,  you can trust in Timber Sash Solutions to reinstate and sustain unique architectural features whilst simultaneously heightening historical value too.

Will you paint my windows?

We will restore, prepare and prime your windows but we also offer a full decoration service, painting internally and externally. Your windows will be lovingly hand painted, bringing out the natural beauty of the materials whilst creating a stunning end result.

Do you only renovate timber windows?

We specialise in timber sash windows, but we also renovate, draught-proof, and manufacture new casement windows, doors, French windows, French doors.

What payment terms are offered?

Under normal circumstances, 50% of the cost is payable as a deposit when making the booking, the remainder is due upon the day of completion. The terms of payment are printed on the written quotation, so you can easily check when the payments are due and it is here that any variation to the terms will be specified.

Do I really need double glazing?

Don’t forget that the greatest energy saving comes from eliminating draughts. Many of our customers have been surprised with both the increased warmth and the reduced noise that our draught proofing system has achieved. Double glazing does of course improve energy efficiency & noise intrusion further, but it is also much more expensive.

What is a FENSA certificate?

When choosing to install new windows or doors on your property, you will also need to ensure the work is covered by the relevant certification. This may include a FENSA certificate, or an equal equivalent.

Do I need a FENSA certificate?

Timber Sash Solutions operates under the regulation of the Federation Self-Assessment Scheme (FENSA) this means that all of our new windows comply with current thermal performance and Building Regulation standards.  If we install new sash boxes with new double glazed sashes, they will be subject to FENSA regulations and therefore you will receive a certificate directly from FENSA once the work has been carried out and we have informed FENSA the work is complete. The FENSA certificate confirms that your new windows comply with current regulations.

If however, we install new double glazed sashes into existing sash boxes (so the original boxes are refurbished instead of being replaced), then FENSA deem this as being a “repair” and so falls outside of their remit and you will not receive a FENSA certificate.

What warranty do you offer?

All of our installations are covered by the HomePro insurance backed guarantee which provides protection to consumers should Timber Sash Solutions cease to trade whilst their installation and workmanship is still under guarantee. The length of the guarantee period depends on the type of work carried out.

Is it possible to make my existing sash windows double glazed?

Unfortunately it is not possible to change your existing sashes from being single glazed to double glazed. However, in most instances we can make replica timber sashes that are double glazed to fit within your existing original sash box frame. This is a more cost effective and less disruptive process than replacing the whole of your sash window.

How long is your lead time?

Our lead times vary throughout the year and depend on the complexity of the work you require. Once you have accepted a quotation, our lead time is normally 10 to 12 weeks for new joinery, depending upon your requirements. If you require draught proofing and repair services we can often schedule the work sooner than that, depending upon the nature of the work involved. Please note that this is a rough guide. For accurate information on our current lead times, please contact us.

Is there a reduced VAT rate on draught proofing?

Thanks to a government green initiative, only 5% VAT is charged on draught proofing. All other services are charged at the standard rate of 20%.
