Draughts are one of the most common issues with traditional timber windows, It is a well known trade secret that the average sash window draught proofing installation will pay a homeowner back in reduced energy consumption within four to five years, and this is why the process attracts a reduced VAT rate of just 5%.

Sash windows have a 3mm gap around the edges to allow them to open and close without sticking. It is this gap that means wind, dust and sometimes water leak into your home, as well as losing heat. To combat these problems without resorting to sealing your windows shut, we install our unique Perimeter Sealing System.

This draught proofing system is a brush pile installed in and around the moving sashes, therefore sealing these gaps whilst still allowing the sashes to move past each other smoothly so as not to hinder their operation. Preserving the unique heritage and charm of period timber windows really is a priority to us, and with the right care and attention, original timber window frames can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

  • Double Glazing

Increase the energy efficiency of your home with double glazed sash windows without the cost of replacing the box frames too. Original sash windows are beautiful but because they only have single panes of glass, they aren’t the best when it comes to keeping your home warm. By replacing the sashes with double glazed sashes, combined with our refurbishment service, your windows and home will be transformed.

Our glazing units are built to the highest standards using the best quality materials. The most efficient type of glass for double glazing is low emissivity (Low-E) glass. Low-E glass contains a special coating of metal oxide which is invisible and lets in light, but is excellent at preventing heat from escaping. This is used in conjunction with spacing between each pane of glass which can be filled with Argon gas.

The gas is used for replacing dehydrated air in the gaps and has a much lower thermal conductivity than air and is extremely effective when it comes to preventing heat loss. The pane spacers which are used to separate the glass are white warm edge and contain very little metal. We’ve found these to be the most energy efficient and can really maximise the amount of heat kept inside your property.

  • Replacement Sash and Casement Windows

When you replace old sash windows in a period property, it’s essential to keep the look authentic especially if you live in a conservation area or listed building. Our timber sash windows are the perfect choice. They combine the elegance of traditional sash windows with the added benefits of modern materials. No matter whether your style is Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian, we can match your windows to the period of your home. And sash windows aren’t just for period properties. They can add a traditional touch to a newer home too.

  • Door Refurbishment

Doors can be ill fitting and draughty, using the same principle as with sash windows we eliminate draughts whilst improving performance. Where possible, we will always suggest renovation over replacement while expertly repairing and replacing rotten panels and sections with ease. So, if your original timber doors are draughty, rattling, or inefficient, we're sure our door renovation services can help bring your timber doors back to life. After all, there’s no denying that timeless timber doors play a crucial role in defining the character of period building facades and their interiors!

  • Painting

Sash window decoration is the single most important factor in determining how long your windows will last. When overhauling, draught proofing, and repairing your sash windows it is extremely important that they are decorated within a couple of months of the installation to ensure maximum lifespan. However, we know that a complete service from start to finish is more preferable, and our team are well versed in the art of painting timber windows. Decorating your windows may sound like an easy task to undertake but it requires a detailed knowledge of the inner functions and mechanisms of a sash as well as a precise, steady hand.

These are some of the most common problems that we encounter on a daily basis: sashes that are painted shut, brush pile of draught proofing is painted making the seal ineffective and restricted movement on the sashes. At TSS, painting sash windows forms part of our daily routine and we take great pride in producing a refinished window without affecting its functionality.

Paint technology has come a long way over the past few years, with water based paints now taking the lead. In order to ensure a good quality finish and longer lasting results we only use the best products on the market providing you with peace of mind that your windows’ new appearance will last for many years to come. We recommend maintaining your timber windows every 5-7 years.
